Brotherhood of the Wolf - by Brad on 10:00 23 Nov 2003
While it is not a traditional horror film, it is a monster movie and has supernatural elements so I will sneak this in under the Horror Forum.
I watched Brotherhood of the Wolf last night on DVD. I totally missed this when it was in theaters so I had never heard of it. It is a mostly French cast but the dubbing is so well done that you never notice it. It is sort of a spooky action adventure film set in france a generation before the Revolution. There is a lot of martial arts action in it that is very much like that of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. It adds an interesting element to the movie although, they could have also made the film without it.
It is hard to summarize the film without giving too much away. A naturalist and his companion travel to a rural province in France to investigate a monster that is terrorizing the locals. They soon get wrapped up in not only the mystery of the monster, but also politics, religion and conspiracy. And all the while the monster keeps on killing.
The special effects are pretty well done, and the directing nicely done. There is a plot with intregue. At times it gets a little slow, but those slow times contain clues as to what is going on and you get to bask in the costumes and settings. Mind you, it never really drags. The settings are gorgeous and the action sequences are fun. This one is well worth renting or even buying.

I agree absolutely, Brad, concerning The BrotherHood of the Wolf. I thought it was a great movie. It is one of the very few movies that I've actually purchased so that I could watch it over and over. When I say "very few," I mean that. In my life I've only bought five movies for myself. Brotherhood of the wolf was one.

BotW gets my vote, as well. I thought it was a great flick, though I will admit that it is not what I was expecting. Traditional werewolf movie, it is not. However, as Brad said, the absolutely gorgeous backgrounds and costumes combined with the intrigue was wonderful.
