I don't know how to approach this without sounding strange, but what the heck...
One of my portals has become irrelavant, even to myself. I've been on a deletion rampage, sucking up my cyberspace clutter, but couldn't bring myself to get rid of a free SK portal.
Those who know me know which portal I mean. Traffic has dwindled because a certain netring host giant has all but squashed the competition. Since they now do a better job listing thier rings than I can, I've got two-year-old dinosaur on my hands.
So, what do I do with it? I've half a mind to create a star wars portal, because all the ones I used have gone 404. All of 'em (what's up with that?).
I'm all about trying new things and thinking outside the (over killed cliche) box. I don't want to build another general sf/f/h search engine. People much better than me are doing a great job of that.
I've got some way-out ideas, but want to hear some feedback from other vortal owners.
What's missing in the scifi community? What hole can PaxLamprey plug?
PS- My webring tips/info site will remain, separate from the portal. The netring giant already mentioned has officially recognized it as a resouce.

That is really a shame CR. I thought you had one kick butt webring resource. I think you are wise not to just abandon that portal though.
Star Wars: I have this feeling that they went bellyup for a reason. TM pressure from Lucas Film perhaps? Or dwindling public interest? I would be cautious about that but it might work if they are all out of business.
Throwing out thoughts here:
With a portal you are at your strongest when you serve a market with a lot of amateur websites. Hobby webmasters just don't have the time to learn how to rank well in Google.
Star Trek - No. Plenty of good ST directories.
A Scifi Movie Portal could be good. Just scifi movies. Lots of fan sites for B Movies to blockbusters.
SFF Online Writing - List original genre online story sites and pages. If you do this require a link back like Bitbooks does.
SFF Fan Fiction - ditto on linking.
You could probably devote a directory to any subgenre of SFF: Scifi Pulps, space opera, etc.
You might want to do some search engine searches on you ideas and see what is weak and such.
I'll keep thinking on this one. Maybe some of the gang here can come up with more.

Thanks, Brad. SFF online writing looks tempting, as does a fanfic portal. Both would go very well with my other portal. Online RPG is round-robin writing with a few rules.
With fanfic and original writing both, there are a lot of good sites by beginner/amateur webmasters. Hmmm....
