I run the banners here at Unified on a Javascript controlled from Planet Doom Portal. Infortunately that means when Searchking goes down, like this morning, then everything starts hanging.
I think it is time I started running something locally here on the shadowdark.org domain to eliminate that problem.
Before I start looking for a script, I thought I should get the opinions of our members and what you would perfer to see: banners, text ads, or different location or what. Any thoughts please let me know.
The banners are not really aimed at members but are aimed at lurkers and people just passing through and help cover costs.

Hmmmm.... ok, I'm really not sure what you are asking here.
Are you asking what we would like to see in the banner(s) at the top of the page? Are you needing to know who/what to advertise?
I'd kinda like to see a rotating theme between sci-fi/fantasy/horror go up there. Rotate between pics of different starships and medieval/fantasy artwork and then some good horror stuff.
I think it would be great to maybe start sharing links with more specific sites. I know we have the links to the portals at the bottom, but through talking with folks at other sites we could probably pass around banners to help each other out.
The problem you run into with that is passing spammers around...
So, am I making sense here? Can you tell that I absolutely don't know what I am talking about?

Okay partly inspired by something Haru said about exchanging links...
I have added a button in the Community Category of the forums labeled "The Gate". Click on that and you will be sent to one of nearly 2500 SF worlds! You don't know what you might end up with.
So the question is, do you feel lucky?
Not exactly what you were talking about Haru but it certainly gives you something to do if you are bored.
Still working on figuring out the banner stuff.

Hi Haru, I spent the morning glugging coffee and looking at picture posting/gallery/scrapbook software. I know you have mentioned sf/f pictures to me on a couple of occasions. I wanted to let you know that I am not ignoring you.
In the less expensive scripts (that I could afford) there are two problems: keeping people from posting p*rn and keeping people from violating copyright. In these cheaper scripts anyone can start a gallery or post a picture.
Not surprisingly most of these scripts are used by p*rn sites
The p*rn problem is solvable. Fluffy could patrol for it.
The copyright issue though goes deeper, and I would hate for some artists work to get put up by mistake. And there is no real way to verify.
If I can find a legal source for SF/F/H pictures for a image rotator I might be able to do that.
If anyone knows where to get the rights to a decent collection of genre artwork suitable for a random image rotator let me know.

I bet you could just talk to some of the artists (if you find any you like) and they would be happy to let you use a few images for free with the knowledge that you would add a link back to their site.
It would be good exposure for them...and what is the point of making art if you aren't going to share it with people?
The more people who know about what they do, the more likely they are to get commission jobs and the like.
