I read today in the Times that the new Harry Potter book, Order of the Phoenix, has been on release in Canada and New York by accident for a whole week, even though here in Scotland (WHERE THE BOOKS WERE WRITTEN) it hasn't been released yet!!!

Apparently its a mistake made by Walmart about the release date, and 7000 copies have already been sold!

Has anyone picked up one of these copies?  I think its really bad, cos now people are trying to give away the events to me already (trashy British tabloids are running summaries of the story)....

ITS NOT FAIR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hols

Hey that is pretty bad.  When is the release date supposed to be?

Its supposed to be released this Saturday coming.......

It's bad form for the newspapers to print spoilers.  Ruins it for everyone.

The good news is only one more day to go.  Do you think your local store will have enough copies or are you buying online?

I definitely agree that it was bad for the newspaper to print spoilers. That just sucks no matter what book it is. However, I feel like Rowling may be going a bit overboard with suing the people over this.

I mean, yes, it was bad....but suing?

Lol, the biggest shop in my town is a book shop!!! They probably order in a couple of thousand copies, so theres no need to but online......

A whole aisle in WHSmith is dedicated to Harry Potter!!!

And its typical of the British tabloids to print spoilers, they just can help competing for the right to say "Exclusive:The New.......Revealed".

GGGGGGGGGGGGGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Heh! I didn't realize it was coming out this Saturday, either. I may have to decide whether or not I want to fight people at B&N to go get a copy.....not that I don't still have 3 books sitting on my shelf that I need to read, first.

*laughs*

I tend to accumulate reading material faster than I can get through it.....but I really, really want to get the new Potter. The other books were great and I'm eager to see if Rowling can keep up the quality of the story. (I certainly hope so!)

In this case I'm not sure "suing" isn't a good thing.  People, such as the #### newspapers, shouldn't try to ruin stuff for other people.  Especially for younger readers.  It's just common courtesy not to ruin someone else's enjoyment, and common courtesy is in such short supply today that maybe people like Rowling NEED to throw their weight around a little.

I fully agree that printing spoilers was a bad, bad thing to do. But, it just seems like anytime anybody has a quarrel, they automatically fall back on the old "sue 'em!" ploy. I guess I just tend to have a negative reaction to that particular mode of handling a dispute.

I'm not big on the whole suing thing myself, and the truth is that in this country suing someone is so prohibitively expensive that it rarely happens, though I think that elsewhere its rather more common?

Also, surely there should be some kind of legal guidelines when it comes to giving away the contents of a book? It seems like madness that the likes of The Sun can be allowed to publish a summary of a novel without any kind of permission.....

See, I'm with you. I would think that that would be violating some sort of copyright type law.

I'm not sure how expensive suing someone is out here, to be honest. I'm sure it's not cheap by any stretch of the imagination.
