Anne Rice Goes Ballistic - by Kainja on 20:23 23 Sep 2004
Apparently, Anne Rice's new Vampire Lestat novel, "Blood Canticle," has been getting slammed by reader reviews at Amazon. The criticisms apparently cut straight to Ms. Rice's heart and she actually posted a long reply that took her readers to task. Some harsh things have been said on both sides. I was very surprised to see that Anne responded, but certainly some of the comments were extremely negative.

It can be rough responding to fans on the web. A few months ago horror author Poppy Z. Brite got kicked out of an unofficial fan mailing list or club that was devoted to her work.
I think people turn some authors and their worlds into icons and forget that there is a real live person behind that icon that may not fit in with their expectations.

I'm amazed that a professional writer would respond with less than a "Thank you for your opinion," no matter the negativity of the critique.
Anyone who writes almost anything and expects everyone to like it is living in a dream world. To respond in a defensive manner will simply bring attention to the flaws in her work - and we all have those in abundance.
She is making a big mistake.

I agree with both Brad and maitaman.
There's a big difference between:
"I didn't enjoy this work because of A, B, and C. These particular styles/characters/plots ets. don't really appeal to me."
and
"This work is a f*ckin piece of sh*t. I'll never read anything by this person again. This sucks! The author sucks!"
You can give a negative critque without being rude and offensive.
(By the way, I'm not defending Rice's remarks here because I haven't read them, yet. So, I don't know how offensive she may have been in response to the reader's comment....some of which were an uncalled for kind of nasty, in my opinion.)

I also haven't read Anne's reply yet, but given the things that some of the reviews said, I doubt that many of the people slagging blood canticle off had even read the book. The main problem with the book is that two very different series' converge, but the two have been overlapping almost from the get go (eg, Aaron Lightner and the Talamasca). People who havent read the Mayfair witches books were rather confused by Blood Canticle, but it makes sense in terms of the previous books. However, responding in a negative way is terribly unproffessional..... I shall have to go and look!!!
