Andre Norton dead at 93. The first woman SFWA Grand Master.
I read a lot of her YA SF novels as a kid and many of her adult SF novels too.

I'm sorry to hear that. very much. She was a big influence on my imaginary worlds in the early days. Some of her YA novels were defining moments of my early life. Galactic Derelict. The Zero Stone. Breed to Come. These were simply outstanding works. How many hours I spent doing spin offs in my mind of her ideas in these tales. A superb talent.

Andre Norton wrote a post apocalypse novel where mankind had descended into a state of barbarism. Not sure what the title was but I remember it having a profound effect on me at the time.

You might be talking about a book called Daybreak 2025.
Her book, "Breed To Come" had a world populated by various species of intelligent animals who had been raised to intelligence by humans, and given human type physical characteriestics (hands). I remember the hero was a cat named furtig. I had such fun with that one.
Her "Galactic Derelict" had scientists finding an alien space ship buried in the past and then ending up taking it on a journey.

Thanks it is good to know the name.
I remember Breed to Come, that was quite good as I remember.
I also remember a story that had a powered space suit that was set to walk in a big circle, like a sentinel. It had been doing that so long that it had worn the rock smooth on the path it took.
I always liked Norton's ruined or abandoned civilization themes.

I think it was about Mar. 17. There is an obituary linked in the first post. I think I read about it in the news online. It is a sad thing but she lived a long life.
