AVP: Aliens Vs. Predator - by El_Pablo on 10:06 31 Oct 2004
In the first half of AVP there are some really nice visuals of the Predator costumes and Aliens. There are also some fight scenes between the Aliens + Predators. But I thought this was about a war between them ("whoever wins we lose") and there are only 3 Preds that fight the hordes of Aliens (WHo you don't see much really)! This is supposed to be Action Sci-Fi?! A few little fight scenes?! Nothing spectacular- you'll come out of the cinema thinking to yourself "What actually interesting happened here?!" No scenes caught my interest. There was way too much talking and walking around and not enough action. What I hate the most is the allying of that rock climbing woman and a Predator. And the tragic scene when it is killed by the alien queen. Jeez! Pathetic! Preds are supposed to be tough sci-fi monsters! And what annoyed me as well - there are no PredAliens! Only that little chest-burster at the end. The movie did not seem to last long either. I close by saying: "Well done Mr. Anderson... Yet Another weak movie and a much loved francise obliterated!!"

Welcome,
I think I liked AVP a little better than you did but I do have many of the same complaints. There was practically a love story between the woman and the predator, which was ridiculous. And how could the woman have worn the head shield of that alien on her arm if the alien's blood was acid? They also could have used their human characters a little better. The chest burster at the end from the predator was pretty obviously coming.
I did like how they had the alien who had been caught in the net left with scars that helped us identify him. I thought the fight scenes were basically pretty good, although I feel they could have been done better.
A major problem, it seemed to me, is that they destroyed the set up for the original Alien by having Aliens on earth, and now having humans who are still alive having seen them. Perhaps they have a twist planned but I think it's a problem.

I think you may be missing the whole point of the aliens having been on earth and being seen by the humans. Lance Henrickson's character is the founder of the wayland-yutani corporation that is basically (for all intents and purposes) in control of earth during all of the alien movies. If you watch alien 1 thru 4 you begin to realize that the corporation is actually searching the galaxy for the aliens in order to use them as bioweapons. The AVP movie reinforces this fact by having the people find the aliens and predators. I just didn't like the fact that weyland died.

Hmmmm.....ok so not loved very much at all. BUT for those of us who liked Predator and watched the whole Alien series, is this movie even worth a rental?

I'm curious about a directors cut of the movie. I ran across a promo website that is promoting the movie and merchandise. You can sign up to get a free DVD of the movie. It's free, but is one of those get more members to the site type deals. It also links to the Fox store for pre-ordering the movie and other related stuff. No word on anything other than the regular DVD release though. Check it out if interested.
