A Kiss Of Shadows - by Brad on 08:51 02 Dec 2004
I just read A Kiss of Shadows by Laurell K. Hamilton, which is as much erotica as it is dark fantasy.  I knew this is a very popular author, aimed primarily at a women's audience but I wanted to see what was up with this genre.

She starts out with some really good world building as she slowly reveals things about Faire in the modern world.  The book is filled with what I call, "Women's Secret Language" - wherein the narrator will notice something subtle like a person raising an eyebrow, and then she will digress for about 4 paragraphs explaining all the meanings that raised eyebrow might have.  Maybe it's because I'm a guy but it quickly started getting a bit tiresome.

The last third of the book was definitely aimed for a female audience and was pretty steeped in women's sexual fantasies which made me feel like a fish out of water.  The ending was not conclusive or satisfying to me.  :p

I don't want to say the book itself was bad, the world building was interesting, just that I am definitely not the intended audience.
