A Bard's Tale - by Arislyn on 07:38 01 Nov 2004
Well, I've found a game that I must have. We've got The Bard's Tale for the week from Blockbuster and it is a hoot!
This is the remake of the old, classic Bard's Tale and they have done a wonderful job with it. The first thing that made me take notice is the wonderful sense of humor it displays. How can you not love a game where you can run through town and tip over the cows? Killing chickens gives you "nuggets". And the conversation between the main character and narrator as they break the third...errr...fourth?....wall...uhhh...as they talk to each other is marvelous! They point out all the fun conventions that you just take for granted in any action RPG and make fun of them, such as the fact that, apparently, when you kill wolves you find that they've ingested an entire household when they spill things like candlesticks on the ground. Why in the heck would a wolf have a candlestick?
You get to chose how conversations go between your character and NPCs by chosing "snarky" or "nice". Hehe! Even some of the nice responses border on snarky as the Bard has a quip for every occasion. And, best of all, the Bard doesn't care about saving the world. Nope. He's more interested in coin and cleavage, as evidenced by your very first encounter: get rid of the fire-breathing rat in the innkeeper's basement in exchange for a "bit of a meal and a soft place to lay your head." (That offer is made as the camera pans to the barkeep's rather large and jiggly bosom.)
This is turning out to be a great game. Though I haven't actually played it much myself, I've been watching as Runt takes the Bard through his paces and, honestly, the game is just as fun to watch as it is to play! I found myself rolling with laughter over the blacksmith who pitches each and every one of his wares with the slick confidence of a car salesman and the barrel maker who pays the Bard to run around town smashing barrels (because that's what adventurers do anyway) to drive up his sales.
Definitely pick this one up and try it!

Bonus!
I thought the Bard's voice sounded familiar but I couldn't place it. Turns out that Carey Elwes of Princess Bride fame is the voice talent behind our main character. And, a more perfect choice they could not have made in that aspect.
