Runt ordered up a new batch of comics the other day and, I must say, they are quite interesting. The latest acquisition is 1602....basically, it's X-men set during the time of the Spanish Inquisition.
All of our favorite characters are there, but in new and interesting guises. We have Nicholas Fury acting as Queen Elizabeth's assassin and spy and Dr. Strange as her physician. Young Peter Parquach (Peter Parker), an inventive young man who likes to make things, acts as Dr. Strange's ward and page. Carlos Javier runs a school for gentlefolk, which supposedly take in orphans....who are actually witchbreed. And, of course, there is Magneto (whose name here who is the Grand Inquisitor, plotting and scheming with King James of Scots to bring down Queen Elizabeth....and to enact King James need to exterminate the witchbreed, as the mutants are called in this series.
I've read the first three books in the series so far, and it is really very interesting to see all of the mutants shown in a slightly different light. So far, the series has (with slightly altered names, of course):
Xavier
Beast
Cyclops
Jean Grey
Nick Fury
Daredevil (a blind minstrel...I love his character!)
Peter Parker (who has yet to acquire his arachnid-y powers)
Archangel
Dr. Strange
Iceman
Magneto
Scarlet Witch
Petros
....and another that I am unable to identify, yet. She's a metamorph, but I can't figure out if she is supposed to be a old character or a completely new one. At any rate, she is Virginia Dare, the first child born in the Roanoke colony and sent to visit the queen.
I definitely recommend picking this up and taking a look.

A couple mentions:
I think you meant to say the Peter is Fury's ward
Also, I'm stumped on Virginia Dare as well. The closest I've been able to come is to the Canadian metamorph on Alpha Flight who changes into white animals. I think her name is Snow Owl or Hawk or something...
A couple other people who show up or are mentioned(some so quick you have to not blink to catch them):
Toad (assassin 1)
Vulture (assassin 2)
Black Widow (woman travelling with Daredevil)
Doom (though it's Otto Von, not Victor Von in this incarnation)
The Watcher (he briefly narrates and we see a bit of him once)
Petros is Quicksilver, right?
The Fantastic Four have been mentioned, but appear to be dead or missing.
Wolverine
Colossus
Clea (Strange's wife, in real continuity she is an ex and a wizard in her own right, I think)
I don't know who Rojhaz is, but something about him's familiar.
I second the recommendation for this series. It's interesting and it's done by Neil Gaiman, so you can be assured the story has legs.

D'oh! You're right. Glad you caught that.
I was wondering who the woman traveling with Daredevil was, but I couldn't put a name to her.
And, yup...Petros is Quicksilver. I couldn't remember his "mutant" name, for some reason. I've always just thought of him as Petros. Weird, eh?
I'm going to have to reread and see if I can spot Colossus. I completely missed him.

Wolverine, Colossus, and someone breathing fire are all in the background of Jean Grey speaking in issue 3. When she's talking about Witchbreed all over the world.
It's Colossus as a little kid, apparently, so don't feel too bad about not recognizing him
Heck, it might be someone else altogether, but his image shows up just as she mentions Russia, so I assume it is him.

Ahhh. Gotcha! *grins* I can't think of any other X-men related Russian mutants off the top of my head, so I'd say your guess is probably right.
I can't wait to get the next batch. I think Runt has already ordered issues 4,5 and 6, as well. (I'm not sure all of those are out, yet. I know he said he ordered more...I may be imagining the exact issues, though.)
